It was b ittersweet, but it was time for the Milan to go. It was a great car and treated me well for 7.5 years as my daily driver.

On Friday night I signed for a 2009 GMC Yukon SLT2!

It has 112,000 miles but the interior basically looks factory fresh.

So far I’m loving it, but it’s only been a few days.Obvious gas mileage hit so, hopefully it isn’t too awful (rated to 20 mpg highway, the M ilan was rated to 26 but consistently pulled 30) it does have the multi-displacement cylinder shut off, hopefully that helps lol.

We a lready loaded the family in it for an hour and a half ride to and from a wedding down in Ohio and it was great- everyone was super comfortable.

GMC is kind of like the Mercury of GM, so in a way this makes sense to me.

Does this mean I have the last Mercury DD on Oppo? Well, probably but it’s not like I did it on purpose.

I have to credit Oppo with changing my perspective on used cars. Before you guys, I considered anything over 50k as having its best years behind it. A few years hangin around with this bunch, and I bought a car with 55k on it and considered it essentially brand new.

Anyway, nice purchase. It does indeed look comfy.  And highway road trips should lessen the mpg impact a bit.

I’ve heard mixed things about GM’s Active Fuel Management on the early trucks (2007-2010 i think). Something about it causing premature engine issues. So many people disable it. Maybe someone on here will know more since it’s all hearsay from me.

Nice buy though, we have a 2007 Yukon XL Denali and it’s a nice place to be in.

The full size GM SUVs are great. I really like them.

Not hearsay, they tend to burn a lot of oil. DOD deleting requires  a cam swap .

Kinja'd!!!1

Why would it need a cam swap? If the computer controls whether it’s using 8 cylinders or 4 wouldn’t you be able to lock the mode in always 8 cylinder? Or is that not how GM’s AFM/DOD works?

I would tune that fuel management system out. My buddy has a Silverado with the same engine and it uses more than a little bit of oil as a direct result of the system.

55k is essentially brand new lol

It’s not 1992 anymore, these things last a bit longer. Especially full size trucks that are used as commuters and never rung out like this one haha

I suppose it’s the Mercury of GM trucks, I always considered Buick the direct competitor to Mercury.

It’s a good truck that should run to 200k no problem so I should have another 7-8 year ride. Once the payment is worked out for the portion i financed it’ll be a whopping 160- ish bucks a month for this thing too which is awesome.

It might be. I still have the 82 Capri tho, so you’re not completely alone don’t worry. Hoping to work on that some next month.

Wasn’t aware of this issue thanks guys. My dad has a Silverado with the same system down south. He hasn’t mentioned any issues but he’s a master mechanic and owns his own ship so it’s entirely possible he just keeps an eye on the oil and never mentions it.

I’m a change every 3k miles kind of guy though so i doubt it’ll get low on me.

That's fair. I was just thinking of GMC as better versions of Chevrolet, similar to Mercury being better versions of Ford.

To be honest, I really hope to be out of the Mercury owner’s club as soon as possible (unless someone gives me a Cougar or something) . My Mariner has been a solid, reliable daily but it’s ready to be put out to pasture. It’s not like it was ever as fun as a Capri even on its best day.

Unless it starts burning a lot of oil, you should have a  perfectly reliable and comfortable daily!

haha, well my Capri is an 82, the fox body style one so it’s basically a go kart with a v8 in front.

but yeah the Mariner is a fine DD, though I’ve heard the transmission (which is different than the one in the M ilan) is not as reliable long term - so heads up on that.

From the other comments apparently you need a cam swap too. And I’m a change the oil every 3k miles kind of guy so I’ll have a close eye on it.

It has 140k miles on it so even if it did fail at this point it wouldn’t be totally out of the blue but I would really prefer it to make it at least 6 more months.

Looks great! Ever since my old roommate/friend got a 98 Suburban, I’ve always had a soft spot for these. I even looked at them before I got my Infiniti, even though they make no sense for me (single, in college, drives a lot)

You don’t need a cam swap, but it IS an LS motor.... so a cam “kit” is pretty cheap and will net you some nice gains.

yeah, the 5.3 has 320/340 so that’s a 60 hp gain in a non performance vehicle for a lot less gas money in my wallet lol. Massive torque upgrade, but still.

Cam swap isn’t necessary. From what I understand, the DoD system doesn’t cycle the deactivated cylinders properly, causing too much cooling in the affected cylinders and this causes the rings to get coked with oil sludge causing blowby and a loss of compression. Simply tuning it out alleviate the issue. There are a few AFM disablers that simply plug into the OBD2 port on the market for sub-$100 if you don’t want to swing for a tune.

I drove a 2008 Suburban in Afghanistan that had around 30,000 HARD miles. Like, think of a rental car that has no one to care about resale value and lives in a big bowl of dirt.  The last time I drove it, it blew through 5 quarts driving from one side of Kandahar air field to the other and back.
